AI for Sustainable Water Access & Infrastructure

Water & Sanitation

Cross Internationalโ€™s Water projects are dedicated to ensuring rural communities in Malawi and Zambia can access safe, clean water year-round. By employing AI for site analysis, drilling locations, and continuous monitoring, via AI4Good2, we aim to tackle water scarcity and infrastructure failure.

Current Work & Achievements

For the past couple of decades, Cross International has been successfully providing clean, safe water via drilling in select locations. Photos:

  • On the header is a drilling project that struck water while were on-site in February, and below show us with community members celebrating the newly accessed water. The proposal here is to use an AI-driven approach for predictive well maintenance and help with efficient placement of future wells with high probability of reaching water.

Challenges & Needs

Communities face limited water testing capabilities, unpredictable ground conditions, and frequent equipment breakdowns. We need:

Financial Assistance for drilling technology, sensors, and data-gathering tools.

Geological Expertise to refine AI models and accurately predict viable water sources.

Local Training on maintaining wells and water purification systems.

Future Vision & Expansion

The long-term plan includes:

  • Scaling AI solutions to optimize well placement and reduce drilling costs.
  • Implementing sensors and real-time data analytics to monitor water quality and usage.
  • Partnering with local governments to ensure sustainable water policies and infrastructure development.
